By Garrett Kroeger
Welcome to this week’s Coach’s Corner with Alexander head football coach Edwin Garcia.
This will be a weekly series as Garcia will provide valuable insight on last week’s result and this week’s upcoming matchup.
Here’s the latest edition of Coach’s Corner with head coach Edwin Garcia.
You guys suffered a tough loss to Medina Valley last week, What did you see on film from that game?
Well, I felt our defense did an exceptional job keeping us in the ball game. Otherwise, we shot ourselves in the foot with two costly turnovers and not being able to make the plays when we were behind the chains. We have had to move people around and have put some young guys into the fire sooner than expected. This will hopefully make us stronger as we progress through the season. We had limited offensive opportunities as Medina Valley did a great job staying on the field for extended drives on offense.
How do you go about trying to get the offense to play with a little more consistency?
Well, I think after some serious soul searching, I believe that we have to go back to getting better at our base offense. Our receivers have done a great job adjusting to all our changes, because of injuries, but the other side of that is we need to return to do the simple things better. Inexperience at certain spots has caused us to not play fast.
It’s our job as coaches to get these kids up to par, but also put them in a position to be successful. I felt we have done that this week. Our offensive staff has been working extremely hard to put our boys in the right spots. We will try to get our impact players the ball in space more this week, and let our players make plays. I’m excited to see our boys go out and perform.
What have you seen on film from Eagle Pass?
Eagle Pass is a well coached team. They have done a tremendous job putting this team together. They lost a lot of defensive and offense players from the previous year, but have not lost a beat. They are under a new head coach and continue to do great things. We will have to work hard to get this victory, but I feel we matchup well against them. Anytime Alexander and Eagle Pass play, it can go either way. But I feel if we control the tempo of the game on offense and continue playing sound defense, our Bulldogs will come out with a much-needed victory.
What are the keys to victory this week?
Again, we need to control the tempo of the game. Our offense needs to set the tone from the start by establishing our run game. We also need to win the turnover battle. That has been an issue in all our losses this year. Defensively, we need to limit their big play receiver to limited touches. They will try their best to get him the ball. We just need to limit the big plays.
