Alexander head football coach Edwin Garcia discusses this week's matchup: Boerne-Champion
Welcome to this week’s Coach’s Corner with Alexander head football coach Edwin Garcia.
This will be a weekly series as Garcia will provide valuable insight on last week’s result and this week’s upcoming matchup.
Here’s this week’s edition of Coach’s Corner with Garcia.
After reviewing the film, what were some of the positives and negatives from last week’s game against Gregory-Portland?
Well our main focus going into Week 2 against Gregory-Portland was to match or surpass their physicality. We felt that we could’ve executed a little better in Week 1, and we challenged our boys to come out with something to prove.
All the credit goes out to our assistant coaches and our boys, they came ready to work everyday. We felt we executed early on all facets of our game. We still need to put a full game together as I felt we didn’t come out to play offensively in the second half. I’ll take the blame for that as I felt we got a little conservative in the second half. Gregory-Portland was a solid team and we almost let them get into the game. But again, our defense as they did time and time again in this game shut the door on our opponents.
What are some areas of growth you’d like to see from the team this week?
Really feel like we need to grow in playing a full game of football. We played great in spurts, but we need to maintain a high level of execution on all facets of the game for four quarters if we want to be playing in meaningful games in Weeks 10, 11 and 12.
The secondary continues to make plays. What has impressed you about their play early in the year?
Our secondary has definitely carried us this year. We had some spots to fill, but coach Mike Vigil, our secondary coach, has done a tremendous job with our boys. Our safeties, Louie Quintero and Hector Benavides, have been playing physical and have been the anchors of our defense. Our corners, Adam Trejo and Mateo Canamar, have also come through for us in important situations.
What have you seen from Boerne-Champion on film?
Boerne-Champion is a great team. They have already beaten two of our district foes. Again, we are facing a team that is blessed with a lot of tremendous athletes. Their quarterback is a sophomore, who is a tremendous athlete. He can run or use his arm strength and accuracy to get chunks of yards. They have very lanky and skilled receivers. Their defense is very physical and aggressive. We will need to play a complete game to come out with a victory.
What are the keys to victory this week?
Our coaches have done a great job preparing for Champion. We will need our offense to finish drives with points and eliminate turnovers. We cannot leave any points off the board when we get to the red zone. Defensively, our boys need to continue to play as physically as we can. We can’t allow extra yards on missed tackles and give any free yards with silly penalties.
