Lady Bulldogs claim district title
Alexander volleyball clinched back-to-back District 30-6A titles on Tuesday after it swept LBJ in the regular-season home finale
The Alexander volleyball team accomplished its first major team goal of the season on Tuesday: winning a district title.
The Lady Bulldogs won the District 30-6A championship outright as they swept the LBJ Lady Wolves in the regular-season home finale (25-13, 25-19, 25-14). And the win marked a significant moment in the program’s history.
Not only did the victory secure back-to-back district titles for Alexander, but it was the first in its history that it clinched a league championship with a game left in the regular season. All of its previous titles – either outright or shared – were won in regular-season finales. This one – for the first time ever – was not.
Winning a district title wasn’t the only significant thing to occur on Tuesday, it was Senior Night, too.
After the win, the Lady Bulldogs honored their six seniors: Emily Buitron, MJ Cosio, Stella Evans, Angie Garcia, Andrea Nunez and Bella Ramirez, all who have helped the Navy & Gold become arguably the best team in the Gateway City. Over the past two seasons, Alexander has yet to drop a single set in district competition.
While the six seniors have played a crucial role in this year’s success, so has everyone else on the roster. Abriella Betancourt, Andrea Garcia, Iza Gamboa, Sofia Gonzalez, Jackie Quiroz, Carolina Sportsman, Abby Herrera, Bri Espinoza, Amari Randez, Mia Salinas and Caro Elizondo make up the rest of the championship team.
Alexander celebrated its newly claimed district title with Queen’s ever popular “We Are The Champions” song as players hugged one another. After the match, head coach Ari Bermea-Mendoza thanked the seniors and their families for their contributions to the program.
Although the Lady Bulldogs are ecstatic with winning a district title, their mission is not complete just yet. Alexander eyes to go perfect in league action again this year, and it has one last regular-season game left before playoffs – which begin on Nov. 5. The Lady Bulldogs eye to remain undefeated as they conclude their regular season with a 7 p.m. match next Tuesday against their bitter rival, the United Lady Longhorns, who they swept earlier this season.
